When the .NET universal top-level domain extension was initially set up in 1985, along with the first domains on the web, it was intended to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure companies. Because there were no specific requirements about the usage of the top-level extension, though, .NET domains were reserved and used for diverse purposes and by a great number of people.
